Looking Glass Rock, an eroded granitic pluton, appears through the Mountain Laurel. The sheer face of Looking Glass Rock makes it one of the best rock climbing areas in North Carolina. Rising to 3969 feet (1210 m), it is comprised of 390 million year old Whiteside granite. The name is derived from its appearance when rainwater freezes on its surface and reflects the sun like a mirror. A prime nesting area for peregrine falcons, is also a major attraction for birders.
