John Jacob Astor, owner of the American Fur Company, hired author Washington Irving to mythologize his company, Irving's book Astoria (1835) was written while he was a guest of Astor. Astoria was formerly a major port associated with fishing and lumber. It suffered an economic decline however, and the Bumblebee Seafood closed its last cannery here in 1980.
