The opulent Hearst Castle crowns the hills of San Simeon. Built in 1919-1947 for newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, it included a zoo, movie theater, and airfield. Guests included Charlie Chaplin, Cary Grant, the Marx Brothers, Charles Lindbergh, Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, James Stewart, Franklin Roosevelt, and Winston Churchill. The castle was the inspiration for the mansion Xanadu in the 1941 Orson Welles film Citizen Kane.
