Hilina Pali, a fault scarp, is part of an extensive network of faults that drop seaward down the south flank of Kīlauea. The Hilina Fault has a throw of 350 m (1150 ft), and likely flattens at depth. In the distance, at center right, are dark lava flows from the Mauna Ulu eruptions which cascaded over the pali to the sea.
