Columnar joints, Devils Postpile National Monument. Columnar joints form as igneous rocks shrink during cooling. The columnar joints here are a world famous occurence, often pictured in textbooks, and rival localities such as Giant's Causeway, Ireland, and Devils Tower, Wyoming.
