My main reason, or excuse, for detouring through West Virginia was to see the New River Gorge Bridge. The Bridge, completed in 1977, was the longest steel-arch bridge in the world until 2003, when Lupu Bridge in Shanghai was completed. It is impressive. 3030 feet long and 876 feet high, and a popular spot for bungee jumping and rappelling.
