Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox, Bemidji, Minnesota, erected 1937. The rise in popularity of automobiles in the 1920s contributed to a tourism boom, which fell off during the Great Depression in the 1930s. Such roadside attractions were meant to attract the attention of passing motorists.
