A roadside rest area in Hurley, Iron County, Wisconsin, has a historical display on mining. Northern Wisconsin also has a rich history of mining. Most iron mining operations, however, began shifting in the 1960s from underground operation to open-pit taconite mines in Minnesota. Although taconite is a lower grade ore, it is less expensive to mine.
