Vulcan, god of fire and metal. Birmingham was sited upon vast geologic resources. Red Mountain's color is due to the oxidized iron ore that lies just below the surface, coal and limestone used to make iron and steel are also abundant. This statue, the worlds largest cast iron statue, was created in six months for the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. In 1939 the statue was installed in it's present location. In 2004 it was reopened after major restoration and renovation.
